The Best Things to Do in Malta on Your Days Off

From the ancient streets of Valletta and the Azure Window's legacy to world-class diving, beach clubs, and the Gozo ferry, Malta packs an extraordinary amount of culture, nature, and leisure into a tiny island. Here is your guide to making the most of your time off.

Malta may be one of Europe's smallest countries, but it punches well above its weight when it comes to things to see and do. Whether you have a weekend or just an afternoon, there is always something remarkable within easy reach.

**Explore Valletta.** Malta's capital is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Europe's most concentrated collections of Baroque architecture. Wander through the Upper Barrakka Gardens for panoramic views of the Grand Harbour, visit St John's Co-Cathedral with its stunning Caravaggio paintings, and explore the network of underground wartime shelters.

**Visit the Ancient Temples.** Malta is home to some of the world's oldest freestanding structures. The Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra temples, dating back to 3600 BCE, predate Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids. Entry is affordable and the sites are genuinely awe-inspiring.

**Take the Ferry to Gozo.** A 25-minute ferry from Ċirkewwa takes you to Gozo, Malta's quieter sister island. Gozo is known for its dramatic coastline, the ancient Citadella in Victoria, and the legendary Azure Window site at Dwejra. It is a perfect day trip or weekend escape.

**Swim and Dive.** Malta's crystal-clear waters are world-renowned for diving and snorkelling. Popular spots include the Blue Lagoon on Comino, the Blue Grotto on Malta's south coast, and the numerous dive sites around Gozo. For beach days, Golden Bay, Mellieħa Bay, and Ramla Bay on Gozo are among the most beautiful.

**Enjoy the Nightlife.** Paceville in St Julian's is the hub of Malta's nightlife, with dozens of bars, clubs, and restaurants open late into the night. For a more relaxed evening, the Valletta waterfront and Sliema's promenade offer excellent dining with harbour views.
